Student Data
Data for Geometry Students learning about Trigonometry.
The Question
How does attendance and homework completion affect test scores in a high school geometry class?
The Data
This data was really important to me because I collected it myself.
Collected across multiple classes of mine over two months.
Separate sheets for different assessments, homework, and attendance.
Cleaning
Missing data was given a zero.
Students who took assessments out of order or did not take the unit test were removed.
Summary table using VLOOKUP was made to have a quick snapshot of all the data.
Analysis
I focused on the unit test because I had data for every student.
Looking at the numbers you can see that as homework completion increased the average of the unit test scores also increased.
It makes sense that as homework completion increases, attendance also increases because there was time given in class to complete these assignments.
Unit test scores increasing with homework completion shows evidence that homework sharpens a student’s skill set for their unit test.
Looking at the test values they seem to go up and down as attendance increases.
Looking at a graph of the test values they do increase and decrease but overall increase as attendance increases.
The interesting thing that I noticed is that the graph for unit tests and homework completion compared to attendance move in similar ways.
The Answer
Students who attend class and complete homework consistently are more likely to score higher on tests.
Actionable Outcome
Due to the findings of my analysis I was able to refine my teaching practices based on my current students.
Frequent reviews / reteach each class to catch up absent students.
Emphasis on important topics so students know what to focus on.
Increased time in class to do homework.
As a teacher this seems obvious but going through this process gives you data that backs up pre conceived notions.
